University of al-Qarawiyyin
The University of al-Qarawiyyin, located in Fez, Morocco, is recognised as the oldest continuously operating educational institution in the world. Fatima al-Fihri founded it in 857–859 AD as a mosque, and it gradually developed into a leading spiritual and educational centre during the Islamic Golden Age.
University of Bologna
The University of Bologna is the second oldest university in continuous operation. Founded in 1088, it has been a light of learning for over nine centuries. Known as the "Nourishing Mother of the Studies," it has produced numerous notable alumni, including popes and several Italian politicians.
University of Oxford
The exact founding date of the University of Oxford is unclear, but evidence of teaching dates back to 1096. It is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and has a prestigious list of alumni, including 28 UK Prime Ministers and 50 Nobel Prize winners. University of Paris (Sorbonne)
